Li Yi on Apple Daily (Taiwan)

I heard that Apple Daily has created a new world in Taiwan. Its copy sales price is 50% higher than the other newspapers, but the retail sales and readership level are tops. Six months ago, they went from red into black. In Next Weekly (Taiwan) a month ago, there was a quotation of Taiwan's world-famous choreographer and heavy-weight intellectual Lin Huai-min's opinion that he liked to read Next Weekly because the writing is first-class and the framework is very clear. In each issue, even those stories about wild female students sleeping around is so well-written. He also said that even if "everybody (meaning the other newspapers in Taiwan) followed Taiwan, none of them will beat it because you still have to wear a western business suit but Apple Daily does not."
Lin Huai-min's words are very much lively and to the point. It causes this writer to reflect on what he could see in Taiwan's Apple Daily but not in the other newspapers in Taiwan. "Wearing a western busienss suit" means that they have to act prim and proper, as if striking a pose; to not wear a western business suit means that to be more in character and therefore more human.
This writer is curious about just how Apple Daily can beat out a path in Taiwan, a society which does not accept outsiders so easily. So last week, the writer went to Taipei for a few days during which he visited Apple Daily (Taiwan) and chatted with Ip Yut-kin and other senior managers.
Antonio Chang writes a column titled "Sima's viewpoint" in Apple Daily (Taiwan), and he is a friend of this writer for almost thirty years. When this writer was running "The 70's" magazine in Hong Kong, Chang was running the independent "The 80's" magazine in Taiwan. "The 80's" was frequently banned. So "The 70's" relayed the articles in the "The 80's" in order to communicate democratic news to overseas. Meanwhile, the "The 80's" relayed the articles in "The 70's" to bring overseas news back into Taiwan in order to promote democracy in Taiwan. We supported each other and we communicated with each other in private.
After the end of martial law in Taiwan, parties and newspapers were allowed in Taiwan. So Antonio Chang was able to fulfil his dream -- he can now independently publish a newspaper without having to compete with the military police to obtain copies of the most recently published non-party publications. But he did not expect that when the "non-party" sector became a legitimate opposition party and later the ruling party, politics in Taiwan would become a daily quarrel between blues and greens and politicians know only about power struggles and conspiracies.
The media are also clearly divided into blue and green. The television stations claim to hold political discussions, but the guests invited by the television stations are either one-sidedly blue or one-sidedly green. There is no exchange of different opinions and the discussions are just propaganda. It is like a holding a party in which everybody have their own fun. The newspapers may be reporting about the two shores, the three communications or unification/independence but the reporters have already set up their stances. A topic will be covered in two or three pages -- in the news sections, in the editorial section and even the small comment boxes -- but every single one reflects the same opinion that is also the position of the newspaper. The readers don't even have to read them because they know that position already. In Taiwan, there is theoretically freedom of publication without control, but the ideological positions do not imply that there is independence of opinions.
Do the public in Taiwan care about the three communications, the two shores, unification/independence, or which politician is coming or going? Is this how they live? Lin Huai-min said (in English): "I don't care."
At that moment, Hong Kong's Apple Daily entered the Taiwan market. Ip Yut-kin and his colleagues from Hong Kong had been in Taiwan for three years. At first, they understood nothing. Earthquakes, landslides, the different climate between north and south ... they didn't understand. But they quickly dived into things and they meshed in with the society. More importantly, they had no political background and they could run a newspaper independently. They will not be directed by the political topics that are manipulated by politicians. As long as there is news that readers really cared about -- including contents related to daily life -- they will put them into the headlines and genuinely get into the lives of the people.
So this was how Apple Daily (Taiwan) rose up. Actually, this is no big deal because it is simply following the ABC's of independent western media. But in a politically polarized society of Chinese people, this small bit of independent spirit is enough to win.

聽 說 台 灣 《 蘋 果 日 報 》 已 闖 出 一 片 新 天 地 ， 售 價 比 其 他 報 紙 高 百 分 之 五 十 ， 零 售 量 與閱 讀 率 均 高 踞 第 一 ， 半 年 前 更 轉 虧 為 盈 。 一 個 月 前 台 灣 《 壹 週 刊 》 的 「 壹 觀 點 」 ，轉 述 了 台 灣 聞 名 世 界 的 編 舞 家 、 文 化 界 重 量 級 人 物 林 懷 民 的 意 見 ， 他 說 他 現 在 最 喜歡 看 《 壹 週 刊 》 ， 因 為 寫 作 是 一 流 的 ， 整 個 輪 廓 非 常 清 楚 。 每 期 寫 一 些 瘋 狂 女 生 怎麼 樣 跟 人 家 亂 睡 ， 都 寫 得 那 麼 好 。 又 說 ， 現 在 「 大 家 （ 指 台 灣 其 他 報 紙 ） 跟 蘋 果 走， 卻 沒 有 一 個 贏 它 ， 因 為 你 還 要 穿 西 裝 ， 蘋 果 是 不 穿 的 。 」
林 懷 民 這 段 話 很 傳神 ， 使 筆 者 想 到 在 台 灣 《 蘋 果 日 報 》 看 到 的 ， 與 其 他 台 灣 報 紙 看 到 的 不 同 景 象 。 「穿 西 裝 」 意 味 zhe 一 本 正 經 ， 甚 至 有 點 裝 腔 作 勢 ； 不 穿 西 裝 ， 意 味 zhe 率 性 而 為 ，更 接 近 人 性 。
《 蘋 果 日 報 》 怎 樣 在 台 灣 這 個 相 當 「 排 外 」 的 社 會 闖 出 一 條 路 ，很 使 筆 者 好 奇 。 於 是 上 周 就 去 了 台 北 幾 天 ， 往 訪 台 灣 《 蘋 果 日 報 》 ， 跟 行 政 總 裁 葉一 堅 及 其 他 高 層 聊 天 。
每 天 在 《 台 蘋 》 寫 「 司 馬 觀 點 」 的 江 春 男 ， 是 與 筆者 相 識 近 三 十 年 的 朋 友 。 那 時 筆 者 辦 《 七 十 年 代 》 ， 他 在 台 灣 辦 黨 外 的 民 主 刊 物 《八 十 年 代 》 。 《 八 十 》 常 常 遭 禁 。 《 七 十 》 就 轉 載 《 八 十 》 的 文 章 ， 把 島 內 的 民 主訊 息 傳 至 海 外 ， 《 八 十 》 則 轉 載 《 七 十 》 的 文 章 ， 把 海 外 訊 息 傳 回 台 灣 以 推 動 台 灣民 主 。 我 們 相 互 支 持 ， 暗 中 往 來 。後 來 台 灣 解 嚴 ， 解 除 黨 禁 、 報 禁 。 江 春 男 也 實 現他 的 夢 想 — — 可 以 獨 立 地 辦 報 而 不 須 要 像 解 嚴 前 那 樣 與 警 總 搶 那 些 剛 印 出 來 的 黨 外刊 物 了 。 但 想 不 到 的 是 ， 當 「 黨 外 」 變 為 合 法 在 野 黨 並 進 而 成 為 執 政 黨 之 後 ， 台 灣的 政 治 就 陷 入 藍 綠 天 天 對 罵 ， 政 客 只 懂 鬥 爭 、 權 謀 的 態 勢 。 媒 體 也 藍 綠 分 明 ， 電 視台 名 為 討 論 政 治 議 題 ， 實 則 不 同 電 視 台 請 來 發 表 議 論 的 嘉 賓 ， 不 是 一 面 倒 的 「 藍 」就 是 一 面 倒 的 「 綠 」 ， 沒 有 不 同 意 見 的 交 流 ， 討 論 問 題 就 像 是 宣 傳 ， 是 開 同 樂 會 ，大 家 都 是 自 己 過 癮 而 已 。 報 紙 天 天 講 兩 岸 ， 講 三 通 ， 講 統 獨 ， 記 者 報 道 新 聞 均 預 設立 場 ， 一 個 議 題 用 兩 三 版 去 談 ， 新 聞 講 、 社 論 講 ， 下 面 小 方 塊 也 講 ， 意 見 雷 同 ， 實際 上 是 因 為 報 紙 有 立 場 ， 所 以 讀 者 也 是 不 看 都 知 道 講 甚 麼 了 。 台 灣 名 義 上 出 版 自 由， 不 受 管 制 ， 但 意 識 形 態 的 先 設 ， 等 於 不 是 獨 立 輿 論 。
但 講 的 三 通 、 兩 岸 、 統 獨 ， 誰 上 誰 下 ， 這 些 議 題 台 灣 公 眾 關 心 嗎 ？ 是 他 們 的 生 活 嗎 ？ 林 懷 民 說 ， I don't care 。
這時 香 港 的 《 蘋 果 》 進 入 台 灣 市 場 了 。 進 駐 台 灣 三 年 的 葉 一 堅 及 香 港 去 的 同 事 ， 開 始時 甚 麼 都 不 懂 ， 地 震 、 土 石 流 、 南 北 的 不 同 氣 候 … … ， 不 明 所 以 。 但 他 們 很 快 進 入情 況 ， 融 入 社 會 。 更 重 要 的 ， 是 他 們 沒 有 政 治 背 景 ， 完 全 以 獨 立 的 精 神 辦 報 。 他 們不 受 政 客 播 弄 的 政 治 議 題 支 配 ， 只 要 是 讀 者 關 心 的 新 聞 ， 包 括 與 生 活 相 關 的 內 容 ，都 敢 於 放 頭 條 ， 真 真 正 正 切 入 百 姓 的 生 活 中 。就 是 這 樣 ， 台 蘋 崛 起 了 。 其 實 並不 是 怎 麼 了 不 起 ， 只 是 秉 持 zhe 西 方 獨 立 媒 體 的 ABC 吧 了 。 但 在 政 治 兩 極 化 的 華 人社 會 ， 這 一 點 點 獨 立 精 神 ， 就 夠 贏 了 。
